Platelet count
Platelet count often drifts down across pregnancy; mild gestational thrombocytopenia is common near term.
Most pregnant people remain above 150 ×10⁹/L. Counts below ~100 or bleeding symptoms need obstetric review to distinguish gestational from pathologic causes.
How to read it
Use trimester bands; trend with MPV/PDW when available. Do not equate a mild late drop with ITP without clinical context.
Trimester context
| Stage | For the mother | For the baby |
|---|---|---|
| First trimester | Baseline count establishes the pregnancy trajectory. | Placental vascular health depends on maternal haemostasis balance. |
| Second trimester | Mild decline can begin with volume expansion. | Stable maternal platelets support uteroplacental flow. |
| Third trimester | Gestational thrombocytopenia threshold context; investigate steeper drops. | Delivery planning considers platelet adequacy. |
