LegalAutomated Decisions & AI Transparency
Automated Decisions & AI Transparency
1. Purpose
This page explains what Optimal automates, what inputs are used, what the output does, and where humans stay in the loop. It is meant to be read with the Medical Disclaimer and the Privacy Policy.
The systems below support a pregnancy-nutrition planning product. They do not provide medical care.
2. GDPR Article 22 and similar laws
Under GDPR Article 22 (and UK GDPR equivalents), you have protections against decisions based solely on automated processing that produce legal effects or similarly significant effects.
Our posture: the outputs in AD-1 through AD-6 are informational planning outputs. They are not solely automated decisions with legal or similarly significant medical effects.
| Point | Statement |
|---|---|
| Nature of outputs | Scores, flags, optimizer suggestions, lab comparisons, Knowledge Score, and AI replies are informational, educational, and planning tools. |
| Medical effect | They are not clinical decisions, prescriptions, triage dispositions, or treatment orders. |
| Legal effect | They do not, by themselves, grant or deny statutory benefits, credit, insurance coverage, or employment. |
| Human involvement | You choose whether to log data, accept optimizer proposals, confirm AI-proposed writes, and act on flags. Your Clinician makes medical decisions. |
Many of these outputs use Special Category Health Data (for example pregnancy timing, meals, labs, and symptoms). Legal bases, retention, and international transfers, including transfers to AI Model Providers, are described in the Privacy Policy.
Your Rights
You may:
- Contest an automated output (for example, a Grade you believe is wrong because of incomplete food data).
- Express your point of view about how scoring or profiling applies to you.
- Request an explanation of the logic at the level described on this page.
- Ask for human review of how Optimal processes your Personal Data in connection with these systems.
Contact [email protected]. The Data Subject Request Procedure explains how we handle requests.
Human review by Optimal means review of our data processing and product behavior. It is not a licensed clinician employed by us disputing your obstetric care. Medical human review is your Clinician.

4. Detailed Entries
AD-1. Day Score / Grade
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| What it is | An informational Day Score and letter Grade summarizing how a logged day aligns with nutrient adequacy models and planning targets for your Environment, including gestational context where you have set it. |
| Inputs | Meal log (ingredients and quantities); nutrient totals from the catalog and engine; personal or planning targets; gestational context; model configuration. |
| Logic | Deterministic compute in the nutrition engine. It is not a generative model. The same inputs yield the same score for a given model version. |
| Effect | Display of score and grade in the dashboard and related surfaces. It may influence educational tips or focus areas. There is no automatic clinical action. |
| Human review | You decide whether the log is complete and whether to change meals. Your Clinician decides medical significance. |
| Limitations | Incomplete logs, the wrong food basis (cooked versus dry), missing supplements, and model assumptions can distort grades. A high grade is not a clean bill of health. This is not a diagnosis. |
AD-2. Nutrient Shortfall, Limits & Flags
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| What it is | Rules-based identification of nutrients below planning targets (shortfalls) or above planning or safety headroom (over-limits), including pregnancy-critical flags where modeled. Examples include retinol, mercury, and caffeine. |
| Inputs | Nutrient totals; targets; upper-limit or safety parameters; gestational or profile context where used. |
| Logic | Threshold and ranking rules in the engine. |
| Effect | Informational flags, explanations, and suggested focus nutrients or foods. This is not a toxicity or deficiency diagnosis. |
| Human review | You interpret flags in the context of your life. Your Clinician evaluates clinical risk and labs. |
| Limitations | Catalog accuracy, bioavailability simplifications, and guideline choice affect flags. National guidance may differ from product defaults. |
AD-3. Diet Optimizer
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| What it is | A diet optimizer that searches for meal or quantity adjustments matching the objective you choose (for example, improve a Day Score, reduce volume subject to a score floor, or emphasize certain nutrients subject to safety constraints as shipped in the product). |
| Inputs | Current meals; targets; constraints (including preferences or dislikes where enforced); catalog foods; safety caps where encoded (for example, mercury). |
| Logic | Mathematical optimization suggesting meal adjustments. It is not free-form generative text. |
| Effect | Suggested meal adjustments. You accept or reject them. Nothing is applied unless you choose to keep it. |
| Human review | You accept, reject, or edit suggestions. Your Clinician oversees medical diets. |
| Limitations | The optimizer does not know your full medical history, all allergens, cultural requirements, budget, or Clinician orders unless those are reflected in constraints you set. Suggestions can be impractical or undesirable. |
AD-4. Blood-Marker Comparisons
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| What it is | Comparison of laboratory values you enter to product-configured target or reference ranges, for display and planning context. |
| Inputs | Marker values you enter; units; dates; target ranges in product configuration; optionally linked nutrient intake context. |
| Logic | Deterministic comparison or banding against product ranges. This is not a licensed laboratory information system and not clinician chart review. |
| Effect | Informational display (for example, below, within, or above target). It may help you prepare questions for your care team. This is not a lab diagnosis. |
| Human review | Your Clinician interprets labs in full clinical context. Our staff do not diagnose from your entries. |
| Limitations | Assay methods, trimester-specific ranges, inflammation, supplementation timing, and comorbidities may not be modeled. A wrong unit entry causes wrong banding. |
AD-5. Knowledge Score
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| What it is | An educational progress indicator derived from quiz, challenge, or learning activity progress. |
| Inputs | Quiz progress and answers; challenge completion rules as implemented. |
| Logic | Scoring rules (points, completion, and related ladders as shipped). |
| Effect | Display of educational progress. It may unlock learning features. It is not a credential or clinical competency certificate. |
| Human review | You. No medical decision. |
| Limitations | It measures engagement with product education, not real-world health outcomes. |
AD-6. AI Assistant
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| What it is | An in-product AI assistant that holds multi-turn conversations about nutrition planning, logging, and education. |
| Inputs | Your messages; optional health-context snippets from your Environment (for example, meal summaries and preferences); tool results such as catalog search or drafts; system instructions and safety policy. |
| Logic | Generative models hosted by AI Model Providers. Additional deterministic layers may run: a safety pre-check on your text, proposal safety scoring, an output safety audit, a nutrition disclaimer for dosing-like language, and propose-only write tools. |
| Effect | Conversational guidance, draft meal edits, proposed journal, lab, or symptom entries, and summaries. This is not medical advice or emergency care. |
| Human review | You confirm every proposed write. Your Clinician makes medical decisions. An automated red-flag safety redirect refuses nutrition coaching for certain urgent patterns (for example, chest pain, heavy bleeding, trouble breathing, loss of consciousness, seizure, suicidal ideation or self-harm, or eating-disorder crisis language) and points you to a clinician or emergency services. That redirect is imperfect. It cannot catch every urgent situation. |
| Data handling | Prompt and context content may be sent to AI Model Providers for inference. Conversation content is stored in our systems while your account remains active, subject to the Privacy Policy and account closure. Processors may retain copies under their own terms for a limited time. |
| Limitations | Hallucinations, outdated general knowledge, incomplete retrieval, imperfect red-flag detection, latency, and outages. Safety layers reduce risk. They cannot eliminate it. |
5. Non-Automations
We do not currently use automated systems to:
- Issue prescriptions or clinical referrals.
- Provide emergency dispatch or crisis-line routing beyond static redirect text.
- Make credit, insurance underwriting, or employment decisions.
- Sell access to your identifiable health profile to advertisers.
- Silently apply AI-proposed meal or lab writes without your confirmation.
If this list changes, this page will be updated.
6. Profiling
Building a nutrition Environment (meals, targets, gestational timing, optional labs and symptoms) and deriving scores or flags is profiling in the data-protection sense: automated processing of personal data to evaluate aspects of your diet relative to models.
- The purpose is to provide the planning product you requested.
- The consequence is personalized displays and suggestions inside the application, not third-party automated rejection of legal rights.
- You can edit or delete logs (subject to product tools), adjust preferences and constraints, stop using features, and exercise rights via [email protected].
7. Model & Engine Changes
- Engine scores, flags, and optimizer results depend on engine and catalog versions. Improvements may change scores for the same log.
- Knowledge Score depends on quiz content versions.
- Underlying AI Model Providers and model identities may change for quality, safety, or cost. System prompts and tools evolve. We do not guarantee a fixed model identity in the consumer product.
Material changes to the purposes of AI processing, or to AI Model Providers, will be handled as described in the Privacy Policy.
8. Accuracy & Complaints
Automated outputs can be wrong. You should prefer primary food labels, lab reports, and Clinician advice when the stakes are high.
