Total fat
Total fat (total lipid), the full fat content of a food, matching the Total Fat line on a nutrition label and USDA FDC nutrient 204. It is more than saturated + mono + polyunsaturated alone: those three leave out glycerol, unidentified lipid and trans fat. Shown so energy and macros use the same number science and labels use.
Trimester focus
| Stage | For the mother | For the baby |
|---|---|---|
| First trimester | No separate target for total fat here; energy needs rise through pregnancy, and fat is a dense calorie source plus the carrier for fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and carotenoids. | Fat-soluble vitamins and essential fatty acids matter more than a total-fat percentage; those have their own keys. |
| Second trimester | Keep judging diet on energy balance and the fat-quality keys (sat, omega-3s) rather than chasing a total-fat number. | Rapid growth draws on maternal energy stores; total fat is the accounting line, not a fetal quota. |
| Third trimester | Calorie demand peaks; total fat on the plate is often how those calories arrive. Still no intake target on this key. | Brain growth leans on DHA and other specifics tracked elsewhere, not on total fat grams. |
Target note
Display and Atwater energy key (info mode). Not scored. Prefer this over summing sat+mufa+pufa for calories.
