Glucose (random)
Random (non-fasting) glucose is a snapshot of circulating blood sugar — useful when fasting samples are unavailable.
WHO/IADPSG diabetes screening emphasises fasting and OGTT cut-offs; a random value ≥11.1 mmol/L raises diabetes concern, while postprandial values above ~7.8 mmol/L warrant follow-up per local protocol.
How to read it
Note time since last meal. Pair with HbA1c and formal GDM screening rather than acting on a single random draw alone.
Trimester context
| Stage | For the mother | For the baby |
|---|---|---|
| First trimester | — | — |
| Second trimester | Insulin resistance rises — random elevations often trigger OGTT referral. | Maternal glycaemia shapes fetal growth. |
| Third trimester | Tight glycaemic control reduces macrosomia risk. | Late hyperglycaemia affects delivery planning. |
