Estimated glomerular filtration rate
Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) summarises kidney filtration — pregnancy normally increases renal clearance.
Falling eGFR or rising creatinine outside expected pregnancy physiology needs medical review. Hydration and muscle mass affect creatinine-based estimates.
How to read it
Compare to pre-pregnancy baseline when available. Proteinuria and blood pressure belong in the same clinical picture.
Trimester context
| Stage | For the mother | For the baby |
|---|---|---|
| First trimester | — | — |
| Second trimester | Renal hyperfiltration peaks — low eGFR is uncommon without pathology. | Placental perfusion depends on maternal vascular health. |
| Third trimester | Sudden eGFR drop raises pre-eclampsia concern. | Placental insufficiency risk rises with maternal renal/vascular disease. |
